The Bond

We are happy to share our knowledge and expertise in selecting the ideal diamond or gemstone for you. Our gemstones are all certified by highly accredited institutions such as GIA, Gublin, GRS and AGS. Our diamonds and gems have also been personally selected and have gone through a stringent selection process, so you can be assured of your investment.

We have always sourced diamonds from socially responsible, conflict-free reputable dealers. From them, we acquire the diamond rough and work together with our esteemed diamond cutters in Belgium, Israel and New York. They ensure that diamonds and gemstones are cut to their best proportions, dimensions and scintillation  – providing us with only the best quality.

There are as many different diamond shapes as there are gemstones – from the popular round or cushioned shape to the esoteric asscher cut, the shape that you choose is an expression of who you are. Let us guide you through this journey.

A diamond’s color never changes, but the setting of a ring may enhance the unique characteristics inherent in the stone, making it more beautiful. Handmade by our skilled craftsmen and set in 18K white gold or platinum, our bespoke service ensures that we will work together with you in creating that perfect ring

 EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE

We believe in quality and value, achieved with social responsibility. We screen through the origins of all of our gemstones and send them to independent and accredited gemologist labs to ensure that they are of said quality. We invest in our gemstones with our clients in mind. Whether you are the Gem Connoisseur or just someone who appreciates fine jewelry, our belief is that you should always have a piece of gemstone that is of good quality. As for diamonds, it begins with a rough mined in Australia, Canada, South Africa or Russia. The rough is then processed in London or Antwerp and sent to be cut in Israel, Belgium or New York, and finally to GIA for independent grading. The Canary Diamond is involved with the procurement of the rough and grading of the Diamond. This ensures that our stones are ethically sourced; we have consistency and quality and also a constant supply of quality diamonds.

We appreciate your trust in us. At The Canary Diamond we are all husbands, wives, mothers and fathers too. Hence we understand the importance this journey holds for you.

From our family to yours, we are confident that our Diamonds, Gemstones and Fine Jewelry will bring you the most beautiful memories for generations to come.

We have a large selection of shapes, color diamonds and rare diamonds such as Flawless diamonds, Chameleons, Type IIa diamonds and Canaries etc to make that ring just a bit more unique.

And while we have a stunning inventory of GIA certified diamonds, rounds and fancies. We offer an equally enthralling selection of startling Columbian emeralds, intense pigeon blood Burmese rubies and Kashmir sapphires to name a few. Beauty comes in many crystalline structures at the Canary.

CANARY’S HERITAGE

Thank you for joining us at The Canary Diamond Co.

We are three generations of Jewelers dealing in quality diamonds and fine gemstones.

As a leading jeweler, we have one of the largest collections of Ideal cut GIA-certified diamonds in Singapore. Whether it is to buy precious gemstones, to choose a diamond ring for your engagement, to celebrate the birth of a child or to commemorate a special milestone in your life, we are here to take that first step with you.

Each piece of Jewelry from The Canary Diamond has a story to tell for generations to come.

Our story begins in Hong Kong. A schoolboy’s dream, watching master designers and craftsmen work after school in his father’s shop which blossomed into a career of an award-winning Principal Designer of an acclaimed Jeweler. With decades of hard work, an eye for beauty and an International network of quality gemstone cutters, this is the success story of The Canary Diamond Co.

Staying true to our motto “Always Something Beautiful at The Canary Diamond”, our bespoke jewelry service and unique designs ensure that we can interpret your ideas and vision into pieces of jewelry that are special for you and your loved ones.

With care, our jewelry will last forever, as will the memories and values they represent for generations to come.

From humble beginnings as an apprentice in his father’s goldsmith shop, William Lam became the General Manager and designer of a famous jewelry house in Hong Kong. He relocated to Singapore to head their operations here for thirty years, before founding The Canary Diamond Company in 2000.

William’s vision and exquisite eye for beauty served him well as a designer, earning him numerous design awards (including the prestigious GIA International Design Award) and also gaining him respect from many within the jewelry industry. He has judged numerous jewelry design competitions in Asia, and also nurtured many budding designers. Some of his protégés have since won international awards and have become acclaimed fine jewelry designers, a testament to his passion and contribution to the trade.

William’s passion for fine gemstones and exquisite jewelry sparked the creation of The Canary Diamond Company. He named his company after his favorite diamond: the Yellow Diamond that glistens with a unique golden hue – known within the trade as The Canary Diamond.

Be Bold, Be Daring

July — the sun rises crimson and fierce. It’s a new season, when the fire of one’s dormant dream is reignited, when flowers stand tall with their faces wide open to the golden glow of hopeful days ahead, and nothing feels impossible.

The season is ripe for love, for manifesting all that the heart’s desires, for blazing new paths fearlessly, for success. What a glorious feeling — this invincibility. It makes perfect sense that July’s birthstone is the Ruby, red hot and bold — favoured by Lady Fortune.

They call it “the Gemstone of the Sun”, “the King of Gemstones”. Yes, rubies are how you dress for the success you want right now. Born against the odds within Earth’s crust, the red gemstone is known and prized for its resilience, second only to diamond.

It has, since the ancient times, been revered as a symbol of wealth, power and protection. Rubies were offered to Hindu gods with the belief of improving one’s karma and quality of life. They were worn in Medieval times as an amulet to keep the plague at bay, and on battlefields by ancient Burmese warriors to keep them safe.

For all these reasons, and the fact that these brilliant red sapphires are rarer than diamonds, rubies have been well sought after by European royalties for ages. Some of the most famous rubies to date include the 100.32-carat DeLong Star Ruby, the Sunrise Ruby, the Hope Ruby and the Graff Ruby.

A ruby’s value is all about its “fire”, so to speak. The more fiery and vibrant its colour appears, the more valuable. And perhaps, more likely to attract good luck, fortune and love.

The Perfect Setting

Setting the stage for a gem to shine.

In life, we learn that in order to succeed, in order to shine at our brightest, we ought to surround ourselves with people who bring out the best in us. No matter how brilliant, there is, alas, a limit to our individual sparkle. With the right support, we could be so much more.

In design and in the arts, the same philosophy applies. True beauty and masterpieces — from Bach’s Cello Suite No 1 to the Taj Mahal, from Yves Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking to Wong Kar-wai’s In The Mood For Love — are born when the result is far greater than the sum of its parts. And in the delicate art of jewellery design, a gemstone needs an outstanding setting to stand out like Grace needs Frankie, Sherlock needs Watson, and the Louvre needs its pyramid. On its own, precious as is, a gem is at best like Beyoncé doing “Beychella” solo: Great, sure, but without a show-stopping band of musicians, dancers and women in formation, it wouldn’t, as Bey would say, slay

At The Canary Diamond, we take great pride in sourcing the best gemstones and diamonds. But design does not second fiddle play. The setting of a ring plays an instrumental role in highlighting the beauty of its stone. In this house, the stones and design, as well as craftsmanship, collaborate like a dream, so that your dream ring can come true. We also have a bespoke service to make sure of that. Without further ado, our chief designer, Johnny Lam, offers some insights into the design process.

Can you tell us about the design process?

Johnny: The stone is usually our starting point, because it determines the overall design of the setting. The next factor we consider is the ring size. With these two key points of reference, we start working on the overall structure of the ring. This is when we make a decision on the style that is suitable for our customer. Will it be a classic setting, or Art Deco, for example? Once that is decided, it all comes down to fine-tuning details.

How important is the setting of a ring?

Johnny: I’d say it is the most important part — the setting informs the overall silhouette of the ring, and it can being out the beauty of the stone or completely ruin it.

Is there a minimum stone size for a cocktail ring like these to turn out magnificently?

Johnny: For cocktail rings like these, it is usually the stone that catches the eye and makes a first impression, so bigger is of course better. It is possible to be creative with the design and work with smaller stones on the side or paved and haloed, but the setting of the centre stone is usually bigger and more dramatic than regular rings.

Are these rings available in the showrooms at Orchard Delfi and Takashimaya, or are they bespoke pieces?

Johnny: Both. We have some signature pieces that we have designed to inspire. We also receive quite a lot of requests from customers for customised designs.

What is, to date, the most memorable and unique design you’ve created? Why was it so special to you as a designer?

Johnny: We had a client who wanted to make something for her husband who was a jockey. We wound up with a very special ring with a horse-head motif and blue-and-orange mane. The choice of colours is because they were the colours of his jersey. I would say this was the most unique ring I’ve designed, and also a very meaningful. It pushed some limits for us to come up with a piece that is visually stunning and still looks like a fine jewellery piece with all these elements.

What would you say makes a setting perfect?

Johnny:The perfect setting for me contributes to a piece of jewellery that, when worn, gives a sense of positive emotion to the wearer and anyone who lays eyes on it. It invokes emotions and encourages dialogue. This is when we know that the design has served its purpose.

Some of these designs are quite intricate. What should people know about keeping them in good condition?

Johnny: All these pieces are quite fine in the way that they are constructed, so sufficient care needs to be taken when you’re wearing them. Plus, rings are the most exposed pieces of jewellery, so try to steer clear of hard surfaces.

You can easily clean the rings using a toothbrush with warm water at the end of the day. Do that in a gentle poking motion. Or you can always bring them into our shop, and we will take care of the rest.

Set Your World on Sapphire

Upon first encounter, the blue stone seems dreamy and cool. Quiet and composed, there it rests, like royalty — on a finger, an ear lobe, or a spot close to the heart — in its deep-blue glow, in deep thought.

Even when surrounded by a celebration of white diamonds (or other gemstones and shiny objects), it remains unperturbed. That’s the Blue Sapphire for you. But do not be fooled. Still sapphires run deep. Beneath its cool beauty is not merely a toughness second only to the diamond, but there’s a whole language of the Blue Sapphire to be discovered — and fall in love with as soon as you’ve mastered the art of communicating with it.

Once acquainted, wearers and collectors of the Blue Sapphire (they include many a king and queen from Medieval times) have come to believe in the stone’s mystical powers, which may manifest in the form of grounding and healing energies, a feeling of clarity in the mind and flow in thoughts and ideas, a sense of protection from negativity and fears, as well as an abundance of joy, luck and career opportunities.

Like all relationships, the one between you and your Blue Sapphire is unique, as is how and when you experience its magic. So pay close attention: How do you feel on a day when you find yourself reaching for a piece of Blue Sapphire jewelery?

If you’re drawn to it in your search for the perfect proposal ring, what is it telling you about your love that words can’t express? The Blue Sapphire has been assigned as the gemstone to those born in September. A change of season as summer gives way to autumn. A time for transformation and new beginnings. Time to set your world on sapphire, and set alight your heart’s desires.

Look on the Bright Side

“More joy”. That is Christopher Kane’s modern mantra. Considering the current state of the world, more joy is what we need more than ever.

Only a few weeks ago, going to a yoga class, eating out at a restaurant, getting dressed for another day at the office, grocery shopping, hugging your friends, taking off to Bali for some me-time on a whim — mundane events that bring us joy — had felt so ordinary and normal. We have taken these simple pleasures for granted, and now many of them are a luxury we cannot afford — at least for a while.

What can we do but adapt and gain new perspectives on life and the way we live? That, in itself, could be a source of joy, no? It is only when something or someone is no longer readily available to you that you begin to appreciate them all over again. So, now, where will we go looking for joy when joy — like Dettol wipes and oranges — seems to be in short supply? Well, we can find them in the things we do have.

Can’t go to a yoga class? We have apps and YouTube videos. Can’t eat out and too frustrated to go to the supermarket? There is no lack of delivery services at our disposal. Can’t see your best friends in person as often or give them a hug? Hello, FaceTime! Hello Instagram. Instead of hugs, write someone a letter and seal it with a kiss — when was the last time you did that? As for Bali — or Paris or Rome for that matter — well, instead of going away, perhaps it’s time to go within to find what we’re looking for.

At a time when there is much doom and gloom, we can choose to look on the bright side. Both metaphorically and literally. One simple trick we find to be an effective and instant mood booster is to wear bright colours. Neon bright. Stabilo-inspired colours were one major trend that caught our eye at the recent round of Fashion Weeks. What we hadn’t realised then was how necessary Slurpee green and bubblegum pink, traffic-stopping yellow and tangerine orange would quickly become in our quest for more simple joys.

You know what they say: When the going gets tough, the tough gets glowing. So glow.
